Rapid eye movements (REMs), EEG alpha, and tonic heart rate (HR) were measured during 6 types of cognitive tasks—imagining a liked person, suppressing thoughts of the person, searching one's mind for alternative solutions, arithmetic involving little concentration, problems involving high concentration, and choosing a preferred activity. The latter 3 required verbalization, the former 3 did not. Only suppression and search did not differ significantly from each other on at least one physiological variable. Imagining, suppression, and search yielded few REMs, high alpha, and low HR. High concentration yielded many REMs, low alpha, and high HR. Choice yielded many REMs, low alpha, and intermediate HR. Low concentration yielded few REMs, low alpha, and high HR. Suppression produced somewhat less alpha than imagining but did not differ significantly in REMs.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that, although responses to long-duration, constant-current surface galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) show substantial interindividual variability, individual subjects show a reliable, repeatable, idiosyncratic oculomotor response pattern to GVS. It follows that GVS may be a more reliable stimulus than may have been anticipated from the literature. The aim of the present study was to examine the metrics of 3D eye-movement responses to maintained (120 s), unilateral and bilateral surface GVS. Eye movements were measured using computerised video-oculography. Two experiments were conducted: Experiment 1 examined whether the normal response is linear over increasing levels of current; and Experiment 2 examined (1) whether the normal response to surface GVS is symmetrical when comparing stimulated sides, (2) whether the normal response to surface GVS is symmetrical when the polarity of the stimulating current was reversed, and (3) whether there is additivity in the normal response to combinations of unilateral/bilateral surface GVS. Five subjects participated in Experiment 1 and eight subjects participated in Experiment 2. In both experiments, the onset of stimulation produced characteristic eye-movement responses: changes in torsional position with the upper pole of both eyes rolling towards the anode and away from the cathode; together with horizontal and torsional nystagmus with slow phases towards the anode and away from the cathode; and negligible vertical nystagmus. These responses reversed direction at stimulus offset. In the fixation condition of Experiment 1, the magnitude of ocular torsional position (OTP) and torsional nystagmus responses showed a linear relationship over conditions of increasing current strength, as did OTP, torsional and horizontal nystagmus responses in darkness. The results of Experiment 2 showed that responses to unilateral stimulation are symmetrical between stimulated sides, symmetrical between stimulating polarities, and additive (with respect to responses to bilateral stimulation). The principles derived from these findings, as well as those of recent studies, provide a foundation for future work investigating eye-movement responses to surface GVS in patients with known types of vestibular dysfunction. Quantitative analysis of eye movements is a useful tool for examining the behavioural effects of ageing. Although the effect of ageing on saccadic eye movement has been examined in some detail, the effect of ageing on a second class of eye movement, smooth pursuit (SP), has received less attention. We examined the initiation of SP in a group of fifteen healthy older people (mean age 72 years) and compared their performance with that of ten young controls (mean age 21 years). Although their performance was qualitatively similar, pursuit latency was increased in the older group. Investigation of the gap effect on pursuit revealed that, while the gap effect was present in the older group, it seemed to be directionally asymmetrical. When the longer absolute latencies were taken into account, although the gap effect in the two groups was identical for leftward tasks, for rightward tasks it was reduced in the older group, although this did not reach statistical significance. The difference between the old and young groups was driven by some of the older subjects. At the longest gap duration employed (400 ms), while there was a clear gap effect for leftward tasks in these subjects, there was no reduction in latency, or increases in latency, for rightward tasks. This asymmetry was not related to chronological age within the older group. These results suggest an age-related alteration in SP initiation that is more complex than general slowing of information processing in ageing. They may be indicative of additional ageing effects specific to the oculomotor or closely related systems.  相似文献

We investigated the ability to generate anticipatory smooth pursuit to sequences of constant velocity (ramp) stimuli of increasing complexity. Previously, it was shown that repeated presentation of sequences composed of four ramps with two speeds in two directions, evoked anticipatory smooth pursuit after only one or two presentations. Here, sequences of four or six ramps, each having a choice of four speeds and either one or two directions (uni- or bi-directional) were examined. The components of each sequence were presented as discrete ramps (duration: 400 ms; randomised velocity: 10–40°/s), each starting from the centre with 1,200 ms periods of central fixation between ramps, allowing anticipatory activity to be segregated from prior eye movement. Auditory warning cues occurred 600 ms prior to each target presentation. Anticipatory smooth eye velocity was assessed by calculating eye velocity 50 ms after target onset (V 50), prior to the availability of visual feedback. Despite being required to re-fixate centre during inter-ramp gaps, subjects could still generate anticipatory smooth pursuit with V 50 comparable to single speed control sequences, but with less accuracy. In the steady state V 50 was appropriately scaled in proportion to upcoming target velocity for each ramp component and thus truly predictive. Only one to two repetitions were required to attain a steady-state for unidirectional sequences (four or six ramps), but three or four repeats were required for bi-directional sequences. Results suggest working memory can be used to acquire multiple levels of velocity information for prediction, but its use in rapid prediction is compromised when direction as well as speed must be retained.  相似文献

Summary Visual fields of ten cats which had one or both eyes rotated at 8 days of age were measured by two forms of perimetry and compared to visual fields of two normal cats and of four cats with monocular rotations at 16 days, 3 months or 6 months of age. All animals showed excellent localization of visual stimuli and responded to the actual location of stimuli in space rather than to the retinal locus normally associated with that location. In cats with monocular rotations, the field of the normal eye was always normal, extending from 90 ° ipsilateral to 30 ° contralateral. Cats with rotations of one eye at 3 or 6 months of age had essentially normal fields in the rotated eye as well, while cats with surgery at 8 or 16 days had restricted horizontal fields. They responded only to stimuli in the ipsilateral hemifield; they were blind in the contralateral hemifield. Their superior and inferior visual fields were normal. The field deficits related consistently to visual field coordinates and not to the angle or direction of rotation. In cats with binocular rotations the visual field of at least one eye extended across the midline. Thus, the extent of the field depended upon sensorimotor experiences of the cat both before and after surgery. It is argued that these monocular field deficits have a central origin, not a retinal one. When tested with both eyes open, seven of 14 experimental animals did not respond throughout the visual field seen by each eye alone. The total visual field with both eyes open was less than the sum of the two monocular fields; greatest losses were most pronounced in the extreme periphery of the field ipsilateral to the rotated eye. Since changes in eye position (e.g., convergence during bincocular viewing) were not observed, it is suggested that the binocular losses indicate suppression of the deviated eye which has a central origin. All animals were tested for visual following, visually-triggered extension (placing), and visually-guided reaching. Cats which had been routinely encouraged to use the rotated eye(s) by occlusion of the other eye showed skilful performance within a few weeks after surgery as previously reported by Peck and Crewther (1975), Mitchell et al. (1976) and others. In contrast, two cats reared with both eyes open after unilateral rotation in infancy were profoundly handicapped, as previously reported by Yinon (1975, 1976).This research was supported by Grant NS 14116 from the US Public Health Service  相似文献

We describe a simple method for computer quantification of eye movement (EM) potentials during REM sleep. This method can be applied by investigators using either period-amplitude (PA) or Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectral EEG analysis without special hardware or computer programming. It provides good correlations with visual ratings of EM in baseline sleep and after administration of GABAergic hypnotics. We present baseline data for both PA and FFT measures for 16 normal subjects, studied for 5 consecutive nights. Both visually rated and computer-measured EM density (EMD) showed high night-to-night correlations across baseline and drug nights and the computer measures detected the EMD suppression that is produced by GABAergic drugs. Measurement of EM in addition to stage REM provides biologically significant information and application of this simple computer method, which does not require pattern recognition algorithms or special hardware, could provide reliable data that can be compared across laboratories.  相似文献

Second-order vestibular neurons form the central links of the vestibulo-oculomotor three-neuron arcs that mediate compensatory eye movements. Most of the axons that provide for vertical vestibulo-ocular reflexes ascend in the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) toward target neurons in the oculomotor and trochlear nuclei. We have now determined the morphology of individual excitatory second-order neurons of the anterior semicircular canal system that course outside the MLF to the oculomotor nucleus. The data were obtained by the intracellular horseradish peroxidase method. Cell somata of the extra-MLF anterior canal neurons were located in the superior vestibular nucleus. The main axon ascended through the deep reticular formation beneath the brachium conjunctivum to the rostral extent of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis, where it crossed the midline. The main axon continued its trajectory to the caudal edge of the red nucleus from where it coursed back toward the oculomotor nucleus. Within the oculomotor nucleus, collaterals reached superior rectus and inferior oblique motoneurons. Some axon branches recrossed the midline within the oculomotor nucleus and reached the superior rectus motoneuron subdivision on that side. Since these neurons did not give off a collateral toward the spinal cord, they were classified as being of the vestibulo-oculomotor type and are thought to be involved exclusively in eye movement control. The signal content and spatial tuning characteristics of this anterior canal vestibulo-oculomotor neuron class remain to be determined.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that in cats smooth pursuit velocity of the eye never exceeds a few degrees per second. This is in contrast with observations in primates, where smooth pursuit velocity can reach values as high as 100°/s. Cats were trained to fixate and pursue spots of light appearing on a translucent screen. Spots were moved in the horizontal and vertical planes at different constant velocities up to 80°/s. Eye position was recorded with the sclerai search coil technique. Naive cats did not pursue moving targets with high efficiency. Smooth eye movement velocity saturated at 5°/s. After a few days of training, smooth-pursuit eye velocity increased with target velocity and saturated at 25°/s on average. However, velocities twice as high have been observed frequently. When the target was unexpectedly extinguished, smooth eye movement velocity dropped to values close to 0°/s in approximately 350 ms. After a short training period (usually 5 times the same target presentation), the eye continued to move smoothly until the target reappeared. These data suggest that smooth pursuit eye movements of the cat are qualitatively similar to those of primates, but reach lower velocities and are more variable in their characteristics.  相似文献

Eye movement disorders after frontal eye field lesions in humans   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Eye movements were recorded electro-oculographically in three patients with a small ischemic lesion affecting the left frontal eye field (FEF) and in 12 control subjects. Reflexive visually guided saccades (gap and overlap tasks), antisaccades, predictive saccades, memory-guided saccades, smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) were studied in the three patients. Staircase saccades and double step saccades were also studied in one of the three patients. For both leftward and rightward saccades, latency in the overlap task (but not in the gap task) and that of correct antisaccades and of memory-guided saccades was significantly increased, compared with the results of controls. There was a significant decrease in the amplitude gain of all rightward saccades programmed using retinotopic coordinates (gap and overlap tasks, predictive and memory-guided saccades), whereas the amplitude gain of corresponding leftward saccades was preserved. Such an asymmetry between leftward and rightward saccades was significant. In the staircase paradigm as well as for the first saccade in the double step paradigm (with the use of retinotopic coordinates in both cases), the amplitude gain of rightward saccades was also significantly lower than that of leftward saccades. Moreover, in the double step paradigm, the amplitude gain of the first rightward saccade was significantly lower than that of the second rightward saccade (programmed using extraretinal signals), which was preserved. The percentage of errors in the antisaccade task did not differ significantly from that of normal subjects. In the predictive saccade paradigm, the percentage of predictive rightward saccades was significantly decreased. The left smooth pursuit gain for all tested velocities, the right smooth pursuit gain for higher velocities, and the left OKN gain were significantly decreased. The results show, for the first time in humans, that the FEF plays an important role in (1) the disengagement from central fixation, (2) the control of contralateral saccades programmed using retinotopic coordinates, (3) saccade prediction and (4) the control of smooth pursuit and OKN, mainly ipsilaterally. In contrast, the left FEF did not appear to be crucial for the control of the only type of saccades programmed using extraretinal signals studied here.  相似文献
